Platelets are found in our blood, along with other blood components. Plasma is the liquid portion of the blood that suspends the red blood cells, platelets, and other cells within our bloodstream. Platelets are needed for blood-clotting to prevent or stop bleeding. In addition, platelets are also a crucial component in injury healing.
Platelets are significant in the healing of injuries because they are the body’s first response to any tissue injury. Once platelets are delivered to the selected area, they initiate repair and attract stem cells to the injected areas. Injecting these growth catalysts into our area of interest/concern then stimulates the natural repair process. In order to maximize the healing process, the platelets must be concentrated and separated from the red blood cells. Hence, the concept of Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy is developed.
PRP contains a concentration of platelets more than what is typically found in the blood. PRP injections are prepared from one to a few tubes of the patient’s own blood with strict aseptic technique. The platelets are separated from other blood cells and their concentration is increased during a process called centrifugation. Then the increased concentration of platelets is combined with the remaining blood. After being centrifuged, the activated platelets are injected into the targeted tissues. The procedure creates, promotes, and accelerates the body’s natural healing process.
